TMJ Basics

Treating TMJ or Jaw Pain in Bakersfield has never been more convenient. If you have jaw pain or popping in your jaw, you are most likely experiencing the causes of TMJ.

Have you been racked with pain in your jaw, or had popping or clicking? Do you suffer from headaches, migraines, ringing in your ears or earaches particularly in the morning? Do you grind or clench your teeth or think you may have undue stress or arthritis in your jaw?  Have you been to a medical doctor and he prescribed pain pills or medications for anxiety with little or no relief? These symptoms are often misdiagnosed by physicians and patients. They may in fact be the result of a treatable dental problem with the Temporo-Mandibular joint (or TMJ). Many dentists and physicians are not experienced or trained in diagnosing or treating TMJ disorders because there needs to be consideration of your occlusion (teeth alignment); and how that may contribute to problems like headaches, earaches and tooth wear.

What do I have? TMD, MPD or TMJ?

We offer treatment of TMJ and Jaw Pain with the use of night guards. If your jaw gets stuck or locked in place, if you have difficulty chewing or swallowing; if you have swelling in your jaw, come see us at Salin Dentistry.

FYI: Temporomandibular Dysfuntion (TMD), Myofacial Pain Dysfunction (MPD) and Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome (TMJ) are one in the same. This is a chronic illness that affects about 75% of all Americans and is more prominent in women than men. Many of these people do not experience pain but still have occlusal disease or misaligned bite. Worn, chipped or broken teeth, broken fillings, changing position or shape of the smile are all indications that people can benefit from TMJ treatment. Because it is a chronic disease, it can take years to develop. Thus early diagnosis with regular dental visits will allow more timely treatment and less structural damage to both teeth and the jaw itself. The optimal treatment would be to bring the jaw down and forward into a muscularly balanced position, and this can often be done without surgery or braces through the use of a night guard.

"We are here to Help!"

Treating jaw pain and TMJ over the years has been very rewarding. Seeing patients find relief from pain is one of the reasons I love what I do

"TMJ (temporomandibular joint disorders) are a family of problems related to your complex jaw joint and may involve a number of structures such as muscles, teeth, nerves, cartilage, and blood vessels. Symptoms can be quite varied and include jaw pain, ear pain, clicking sounds, limited jaw movement and many more. You’ll be glad to know that these problems are more easily diagnosed and treated than they were in the past. They occur when the joints of the jaw and mastication muscles do not work together correctly. Resolving this issue usually consists of more than one treatment. This malady takes years to develop and the treatment may take time to become effective. I am confident that here at Salin Dentistry, we can provide you the relief when you are seeking help to rectify TMD."
